ACOG statement on Doulas

ACOG just released a statement about the role of Doulas

Why do Doula’s have mixed feelings about it?
What are the key points?

• Obstetrician–gynecologists should educate themselves about doulas' spectrum of practice and the benefits of their work.

• Obstetrician–gynecologists should create synergistic, respectful teams that include doulas in ways that benefit patients and the workplace.

• Obstetrician–gynecologists should educate patients about the various roles of a doula and should be aware of local resources to assist patients in identifying doulas and related community resources.

• Obstetrician–gynecologists should be aware that there are various coverage and access options for doula support.

• Obstetrician–gynecologists should advocate for and support research on partnerships with doulas and the roles of doulas in obstetric and gynecologic care.

How will this shape the role of a doula in Saudi?

Hospitals here respect the American system.
Doulas now have a statement to refer to, when working in collaboration with OBGYNs. If we become more common place, and work with OBGYNs we can reduce interventions and increase maternal satisfaction within the Saudi system inshallah 🤲

Why do Doula’s feel mixed about this statement? Some doulas feel as though their role and position does not require the validation from another profession, they feel as though they stand in their own right without the recognition of OBGYNS.

I can understand this sentiment, but personally, I don’t agree. As a licensed allied health professional, I have worked within the hospital system for many years, and I have been required to hold professional relationships with Doctors from all specialties. Being a doula relies on good communication between health professionals, and being a doula in Saudi Arabia means you will most likely be working with OBGYNs over midwifes (which is more common internationally). I think the statement puts the pressure on OBGYNs to learn about our role, not so we’re validated by them, but so that they can learn how to work with us. This is to the benefit of mum and baby.
